Aucuba 'Japanese Laurel': Golden King

Aucuba japonica 'Golden King', also known as Golden King Japanese Laurel, is a heavily spotted leaved aucuba which grows slowly as a dense, rounded, evergreen shrub. It is prized for its dazzling leaves which are brightly variegated with yellows and greens. This cultivar is considered male, meaning it does not produce berries or flowers, but can pollinate female shrubs nearby. Shurb size in ideal conditions are roughly 4-6 ft tall and wide. It is a hardy, deer-resistant shrub, ideal for brightening shady, woodland-style gardens.

This plant requires consistent moisture for the first growing season, generally needing weekly, deep watering to establish. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, requiring water only during dry spells. Though it prefers consistent moisture, it will not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
