  • Hydrangea macrophylla, also known as a Nikko Blue Bigleaf Hydrangea, is a woody, deciduous, perennial shrub and is native to Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia. This variety produces ball-shaped flower clusters known as "mop-heads". Blue flowers develop with acidic soil and pink flowers in alkaline soil. It blooms during the late spring and summer on the previous year's growth, often described as "old wood." Native bees nest in the dead, hollow stems, so gardeners are encouraged to cut back dead stems to 12 to 24 inches and allow them to remain standing until they disintegrate on their own. It is tolerant of both clay and sandy soil and has some salt tolerance. This plant rapidly grows into a multi-stemmed shrub with a rounded habit and is generally 3 to 6 feet tall and wide at maturity.
