Farfugium 'Leopard Plant': Giganteum

Farfugium japonica var. giganteum, is a genus of rhizomatous evergreen flowering plants native to Asia. Many cultivars have been developed with showy variegated leaves, but these have extra large rounded leathery leaves. They can be used as a ground cover along streams and ponds or as an understory plant. They look great mass-planted in shady areas but also do well in containers. Also known as: Giant Leopard Plant, Tractor Seat Plant

Farfugium thrives in partial shade to full shade conditions, preferring dappled sunlight or filtered light. The ideal placement is an area that receives shade throughout the day or at least only a few hours of direct sun.

 

Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves, leading to wilting and burns. 

Farfugium grows by rivers and streams in its native habitat, so these plants require consistently moist, but well-draining soil.

 

Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding both waterlogging and prolonged dryness. While they prefer moist conditions, it's crucial to prevent overwatering, which can lead to root rot. 

 

Water more frequently during active growth and hot summer months, and less often in cooler winter periods.
