This plant thrives in partial to full shade, preferring morning sun with afternoon shade to protect it from our intense Charleston heat. It needs filtered light or light shade, ideally under a canopy of deciduous trees that allows spring sun to shine while providing summer shade.

This plant requires consistently moist, well-drained soil, especially during its spring and summer growing season. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, as it is a thirsty plant that can drink up to 3 gallons weekly, especially in during our hot Charleston summers.
