Clerodendrum 'Bleeding Heart' Vine

Clerodendrum thomsoniae, also known as Bleeding Heart Vine, is a tropical, twining evergreen climber known for its dramatic flowers, which feature crimson red petals emerging from pale pink, heart-shaped bracts. It hails from tropical West Africa, specifically ranging from Cameroon to Senegal. It is a fast climber and does best on a trellis, wall, or fence. If growing several along a fence, plant them 3 feet apart. Keep these vines at least 4 or 5 feet from the nearest shrub or tree.

This plant thrives in partial to full shade, preferring morning sun with afternoon shade to protect it from our intense Charleston heat. It needs filtered light or light shade, ideally under a canopy of deciduous trees that allows spring sun to shine while providing summer shade.

This plant requires consistently moist, well-drained soil, especially during its spring and summer growing season. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, as it is a thirsty plant that can drink up to 3 gallons weekly, especially in during our hot Charleston summers. Reduce watering in winter, allowing it to dry out slightly

Bleeding heart vine usually needs a hard pruning to keep it full and bushy and an ideal size. Cut back hard in early spring and again if needed in early fall. You can do minor shape trimming anytime. We recommend Bond Bypass Pruners.
