Euphorbia 'Pencil' Cactus: Firestick

Euphorbia tirucalli, also known as Firestick Pencil Cactus, isn't a cactus at all, but a part of the Euphorbia family. This plant originally hails from the drier areas of Africa and India. Frost and freezes will kill this plant, so keeping it as a houseplant or moving it inside during cold spells is best.

This plant requires full sun or bright, direct sunlight for 6-8 hours daily to maintain its vibrant colors and compact shape. If grown outdoors, it needs full sun, but must be gradually acclimatized over 2-3 weeks to prevent sunburn. If grown indoors, place it near a south or west-facing window. 

Inadequate light can lead to the plant growing green and leggy, so a grow light is a good option for poorly lit spaces.

This plant requires infrequent watering, with the soil needing to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. If grown outside, keep an eye on how much rain this receives—it may need to be relocated to an area that receives less rain. 

Spring/ Summer:
Water thoroughly when dry, typically every two or three weeks in the growing season. 

Fall/ Winter:
Reduce to once a month or less, as the plant is often dormant. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure your pot has a drainage hole to avoid moisture buildup.
