Alpinia zerumbet, also known as Variegated Shell Ginger, is a lush and showy clumping evergreen with an upright growing habit until its leaves unfurl and spread. This plant originally hails from India where it thrives in open woodlands.

This plant relies on full sun to partial shade, though it can also tolerate full shade. Grown outdoors, the leaves may get scorched in our hot Charleston climate—a bit of afternoon shade would be beneficial. Indoors, the plant needs bright light to maintain its vibrant variegation and healthy growth.

This plant requires consistently moist soil. Water it weekly during the growing season, or when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, and less frequently in winter. Avoid letting the soil get soggy and waterlogged, but don't let this plant dry out completely. It is not drought-tolerant and can wilt without regular moisture. Provide high humidity through misting or placing the plant in a humid environment to support its tropical nature.
