Pennisetum 'Fountain' Grass: First Knight
Pennisetum purpureum, also known as Pennisetum: First Knight, is a perennial grass (hardy from zones 7-11) and are grown for their attractive foliage and in some cases also their attractive inflorescence. Some cultivars have striking purple foliage, like this one. It is the result of a planned breeding program of a cross between Pennisetum glaucum, P. purpureum and P. squamulatum. It grows with upright sword-like foliage to 4 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. It makes for a lovely specimen or planted in mass. It provides wonderful texture and color—a great contrast for borders or open areas.

This plant thrives best in full sun (6+ hours), though it can tolerate light partial shade. Full sun is required to bring out the deepest colors in its foliage.
This plant requires moderate, regular watering. Keep the soil evenly moist, but well-drained. It tolerates dry spells once established, but cannot handle standing water. Water newly planted grass deeply twice a week, and reduce watering as it matures or during cooler months.
