Sphaeropteris 'Australian Tree' Fern

Sphaeropteris cooperi, also known as the Australian Tree Fern, is an interesting plant—known as the lacy tree fern in its own native country, has delicate and feather-like fronds, that slowly unfurl into fuzzy stems. The Australian Tree Fern is a tropical giant (when grown in its native habitat) with a trunk reaching heights of 15 or even 30 ft. The long, large leaves form a handsome canopy and give a tropical feel to the landscape. However in Charleston, it makes for a great small houseplant.

 

Due to the frost that we experience in Charleston, this should be grown in a pot which can then be transferred indoors during the winter months.

Australian Tree Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can cause their fronds to burn. They prefer consistent, moderate light levels and can do well outdoors under a canopy or indoors in a bright room. If placed directly in a sunbeam, be sure it has a sheer curtain or filter to prevent scorching.

Australian Tree Ferns require consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged conditions, and high humidity for healthy growth. Water frequently during the growing season to keep the soil evenly moist and reduce during winter months—using the finger-dip test to check for dryness. Water the trunk and soil thoroughly, but avoid directly soaking the fern's crown to prevent rot.

These plants are sensitive to intense fertilizers, we recommend a slow release fertilizer, like Osmocote Smart-Release Plant Food.
