Muhlenbergia 'Bamboo Muhly' Grass

Muhlenbergia dumosa, also known as Bamboo Muhly Grass is a tall, semi-woody, semi-evergreen grass covered with lacy green foliage. The upright, arching stems can reach 4-6ft tall, and the plant can reach up to 5ft wide as the clump slowly spreads. If clumps get too large, they can be dug up and divided to make new plants. In fall or winter, the plant may turn a tannish color and produce tiny, inconspicuous flowers. Older canes of Bamboo Muhly can also be removed periodically to give the plant a fresh look and to encourage new growth.

This plant prefers full sun (6+ hours) for optimal growth, however it can tolerate partial shade. Too much shade and the grass will become weak and floppy.

Water bamboo muhly regularly until it is established, and as needed after that. Due to it's native environment in western United States, it becomes slightly drought tolerant.

Foliage will likely die back if the plant is exposed to freezing temperatures. If this happens, prune back the brown foliage just before growth starts in the spring. We recommend Modern Sprout Garden Pruners.
