Asparagus 'Plumosus' Fern

Asparagus setaceus, also known as Plumosus Fern, is native to Central Ethiopia to Southern Africa. It is commonly used as an ornamental houseplant due to its showy and soft leaf texture. These ferns aren't actually ferns at all, but belong to the Asparagus family. They prefer slightly acidic soil and due to their tuber growth, can become root bound quickly.

This plant requires bright, indirect light. 

Plumosus prefers watering when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, which causes root rot. Misting daily will help maintain proper humidity.

Proper nutrition is important to the health of your plant and its longevity. To ensure your plant is getting the appropriate nutrition, use a fertilizer directed for this type of plant and apply according to the label.

Potential insect pests include slugs, mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. This can be taken care of with Bonide Neem Oil.

 

Inadequate air circulation and wet foliage can cause leaf spot. Yellowing of the leaves can be caused by either overwatering or poor drainage. If the humidity is too low, browning of the leaf tips can occur. Root rot can occur from overwatering.

If grown outdoors and berries are produced, they are toxic to people and pets.
