Mandevilla Vine: Crimson Red
Mandevilla is a tropical perennial woody vine and shrub belonging to the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). There are over 180 recognized species occurring from the Desert Southwest of the USA through Mexico and Central America to South America. Many species are native to Brazil. Most species overwinter only in the tropical South. In South Carolina they can be treated as annuals or grown indoors. They can be brought indoors before temperatures dip between 45-50 degrees and treated as a houseplant during the winter months. In the spring, Mandevilla can be returned outside after the last spring freeze or after the threat of freezing weather has passed. The flowers are produced in early summer and again in early fall, even when plants are very young. Mandevilla is great trellised in containers or in hanging baskets.
