Mentha 'Mint': Mojito

Mentha x villosa, also known as Mojito Mint, is a hardy perennial hailing from Cuba—known for it's traditional use in the mojito cocktail. It has bright to medium green leaves, often with a puckered texture and distinct reddish stems. Mojito mint produces small, spikes of white to pale pink or lilac flowers in early to late summer. While these blooms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, they can reduce the flavor intensity of the leaves, so gardeners often pinch them off. This plant grows in USDA Zones 5-9.

Mojito Mint thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it enjoys bright light, it prefers some afternoon shade in from our hot Charleston climates to prevent wilting.

This plant requires consistently moist, well-draining soil, typically needing 1–2 inches of water per week. Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry, increasing frequency during our hot Charleston summer months or for container-grown plants. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent root rot.
