  • Cercis chinensis Kay's Early Hope, is an early-blooming deciduous tree in the bean (Fabaceae) family. This Chinese redbud cultivar is known for its intense magenta-pink flowers that cover branches before leaves emerge in early spring. Heart-shaped, dark green leaves, and golden-yellow foliage form in autumn. This tree is one of the earliest to bloom, with a longer duration than other Cercis varieties. Reaching 10–15 ft tall and wide, this tree forms an upright, vase-shaped spreading habit—ideal for small gardens, patios, or as a specimen. It prefers well-drained soil and exhibits good heat and humidity tolerance. Excellent for pollinators and pollinator gardens. Redbuds in general do not transplant well so choose your planting site carefully.

The genus name Cercis comes from the Greek word kerkis, which means weaver's shuffle, referring to the fact that the seed pod resembles the size and shape of a weaver’s shuttle used to move thread back and forth on a loom.
