'Azalea Indica': Formosa

These plants thrive in dappled lighting, morning sun for optimal blooming is best. Afternoon shade helps to shield the plant from leaf burn. 

This plant requires consistently moist soil, needing about 1 inch of water per week. Newly planted shrubs require daily water for 2 weeks, then deep watering 1–2 times weekly. Although slightly more drought-tolerant than others, they must be watered thoroughly if there is a lack of rain during our hot Charleston summers. Avoid over watering to prevent root rot. 

Pruning, if desired, may be done after flowering. We recommend Bond Drop Forged Pruner.

They do not tolerate dense clay, so amend clay soil with organic material. The roots may rot if the soil does not drain well. Plant the root ball high in the soil to help with drainage issues.

This plant likes acidic soils, we suggest Espoma Holly Tone. Avoid over fertilizing which can lead to root burn due to their shallow root system.
