Viburnum 'Arrowwood': Chindo

Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo', is an upright, dense, woody, broadleaf evergreen shrub. It is a rapid grower—reaching 10-12ft tall and 6-8ft wide. It produces fragrant tiny clusters of white flowers in the spring—attracting bees, butterflies, pollinators, and birds. In the fall, red berries in heaping clusters provide food for wildlife. Plant it as a large accent shrub, evergreen hedge or screen. It can be used in borders, or open woodlands in a sunny location and in drought-tolerant and pollinator gardens. It is mildly resistant to deer damage.

This plant needs full sun (6+ hours) to partial shade for optimal growth. In our hot Charleston climate, this plant does well with some afternoon shade. Too much shade results in fewer flowers and less dense branches. 

Newly planted specimens require moist soil for the roots to establish—watering approximately every 1 to 2 days. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.

The lower branches can be trimmed to create a small single-trunked tree. Next season’s fruit will also grows on old growth. Prune at most one-third of the shrub after flowering—we recommend Modern Sprout Pruners.
