Juniperus 'Eastern Red Cedar'
Juniperus virginiana, also known as an Eastern Red Cedar is an evergreen, coniferous tree, native to North America and grows as North as Maine, as South as Florida, and west to South Dakota and Texas. Eastern red cedar has blue-green, overlapping, scale-like leaves at maturity, but young shoots may have spreading, needle-like leaves. The heartwood is light brown and aromatic, in contrast to the white sapwood, and is commonly used for cedar chests. In good conditions, it will grow to 30 to 40 ft in height and reach a width of 10 to 20 ft. It will tolerate a variety of soils and growing conditions, from swamps to dry, rocky ground. Plant 12 to 24 ft apart, as it needs airy space to grow. Easy to transplant. It is highly salt tolerant. This tree is also resistant to damage by deer.

It prefers moist conditions, but is intolerant of continuously wet soil. It has the best drought resistance of any conifer native to the eastern United States. Because it is an evergreen tree, it consumes water year round—averaging between a half gallon to 20 gallons a day depending on the size and maturity of the tree.
Your plant needs food too! We recommend Espoma Tree Tone.
