Euphorbia 'Devils Backbone' Cactus

Pedilanthus tithymaloides, also known as The Devil's Backbone is an erect succulent shrub that is native to the subtropical areas of Florida, Central America, and South America. It grows from 2 to 10 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide and has green, zigzag shaped branches. It is a member of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). The devil's backbone has simple, alternate, green leaves tinged with pink. The leaves are smooth, ovate, with pointed tips.

This plant prefers bright, indirect light. While it tolerates some direct sun, intense, scorching afternoon sun should be avoided. Indoors, place it near a bright, south- or west-facing window. Insufficient light causes lanky growth and lost variegation.

This plant requires sparse watering, allowing the soil to dry 1–2 inches deep between waterings to avoid root rot. Water every 1–2 weeks during growing seasons (spring/summer) and reduce to monthly or less in winter. Use well-draining soil and ensure the pot has drainage holes.

This plant prefers a well-drained, potting mix that is used for succulents. We recommend Rosy Soil Organic Cactus & Succulent Mix.
