Hydrangea 'Smooth': White American Lace

Hydrangea arborescens, also known as a White American Lace Smooth Hydrangea, is a rounded, deciduous shrub. It is native to eastern and central United States, calling moist or rocky wooded slopes, ravines, and stream banks home. In it's ideal habitat, it can grow 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. It is a very cold-hardy species but will also grow in warmer climates. Unlike other hydrangeas, the flower color of this plant is not affected by the soil pH. Consider using smooth hydrangea in a mass planting or as a specimen for native, pollinator, rain, or shade garden. It attracts butterflies, moths, pollinators and songbirds. It is deer, rabbit, and salt resistant.

This plant prefers partial shade—the more sun it receives the more moisture it will need to tolerate our hot Charleston climate. 

This plant requires about 1 inch of water per week. Water deeply at the base of the plant early in the morning. Always check the soil first: if the top 1-2 inches are dry, it needs a soak, but if it's moist, hold off to prevent root rot. 

This plant blooms on new wood and can be pruned back close to the ground in late winter to encourage vigorous stem growth. After the new shoots produce very large flower clusters, any weak or damaged stems should be removed in early spring. We suggest Bond Drop Forged Pruner.

This plant requires neutral to acidic soil. We recommend Espoma Soil Acidifier.
