Asplenium 'Bird's Nest' Fern: Japanese
Asplenium antiquum, also known as the Japanese Bird's Nest Fern, is a tropical evergreen, epiphytic herbaceous perennial native to warm, temperate, and subtropical regions of East Asia—specifically Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea. It belongs to the Spleenwort family (Aspleniaceae). This plant does not tolerate dry conditions, nor can it tolerate frost. It's native habitat is damp, shaded, and often near waterfalls or in humid, subtropical climates. It is characterized by upright, glossy, vibrant green, and often wavy fronds that grow in a circular nest-like rosette. The plant is a litter trapper—its funnel-shaped rosette of fronds catches falling leaves and other debris and creates its own compost pile, which feeds the plant.
