Sage 'Purple'

Salvia officinalis 'Purple', also known as Purple Sage, is an aromatic, edible, short-lived, bushy, spreading, semi-woody, drought-tolerant perennial shrub. It is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). The plant is native to the Mediterranean region, where it grows in shrublands or grasslands on hillsides and mountains. It can grow upwards of 2 feet tall and 10-12 inches wide light green fuzzy leaves and light purple stems. It is hardy in Zones 6-9. The flowers may be bluish-lavender to pinkish-lavender and appear on upright spikes in the early summer, attracting butterflies and bees. The leaves are very aromatic and may be harvested in the spring and summer. For new plantings, it is best to harvest lightly the first year. Pruning is recommended in the spring and during the growing season to keep the plant from becoming leggy and to control flowering when used as a culinary herb. Do not prune into mature woody stems, as these seldom sprout new growth. Tall plants may require staking.

This plant  requires full sun (6+ hours) for optimal growth, color vibrancy, and flavor. While it can tolerate very light, partial shade, insufficient light often results in leggy, sprawling growth.

This plant requires low to moderate water, thriving on a schedule where the soil dries out completely between waterings. Established plants are drought-tolerant and prefer well-drained soil to avoid root rot.

Cut back this plant by one-third after flowering in late spring/early summer to maintain a bushy shape and prevent it from becoming woody. We recommend Bond Bypass Pruners.
