Goeppertia 'Calathea': Rattlesnake

Goeppertia insignis, also known as the Rattlesnake Calathea, is an evergreen perennial native to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil. It is a common houseplant, known for its waxy long leaves, purple underside, wavy edges, and interesting markings that resembles a snake skin. This plant can grow from 1.5 ft tall in most ideal indoor growing conditions, but can reach 2.5 ft tall in ideal outdoor conditions.

This plant likes limited sun to bright shade locations. It does not tolerate full sun, drafts, or sudden temperature changes. It will tolerate early morning sun or diffused sun.

For best results growing indoors, provide a uniformly moist environment in a well-drained potting mixture. To provide the required high humidity consider standing the potted plant in a bed of wet pebbles, misting the foliage regularly, or growing the plant in a humidified room.

 

Spring/ Summer:
Water regularly to keep soils moist (but not wet) and apply a balanced fertilizer monthly.

 

Fall/ Winter:
Reduce watering and fertilization in winter when plant growth typically slows down.
