Pyrus 'Pear' Tree: Kieffer
Pyrus communis 'Kieffer' or the Kieffer Pear Tree, is an accidental hybrid, generally considered a cross between the European pear (Pyrus communis) and the Asian sand pear (Pyrus pyrifolia), resulting in a hardy, fast growing, fire-blight-resistant, and versatile fruit tree. Mature trees can reach 40-50 ft tall and 25 to 35 ft wide. These trees produce large, long, golden-yellow fruit with white, coarse flesh that is firm, crisp, and slightly tart. The fruit ripens mid-September to mid-October, or as late as November/early December. The fruit is excellent for canning, preserving, baking, and cooking. Kieffer Pear is hardy in zones 4–9, with high tolerance for heat, drought, flood, and heavy soils. This tree is also self-fertile, but produces better crops when planted with another cultivar. A low-maintenance tree, requiring little pruning aside from managing height and removing deadwood.
