  • Pycnanthemum, also known as Slender Mountain Mint, is a genus of herbaceous perennials in the mint family that are native to North America. In ideal conditions, these plants grow around 1-3ft tall. The leaves have a strong minty fragrance when crushed and can be used in cooking and making teas. They can spread aggressively by rhizomes but can be potted if spreading isn’t desired. The densely packed clusters of flowers attract many pollinators in July to September. Use Mountain Mint in naturalized areas as well as native, pollinator, butterfly or edible gardens. This plant is one of the 20 key pollinator plants that should be blooming in August for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census.
