Mahonia: Soft Caress
Berberis eurybracteata, also known as Mahonia or Chinese Barberry is a broadleaf evergreen shrub, endemic to China. The slender leaves can be blue-tinged and highlight a soft hand compared to the prickly feel of the original plant. This shrub will grow 4 to 5 ft tall in an ideal climate. In fall to early winter showy clusters of flowers appear, followed by clusters of berries. This shrub can be used in borders, groups and as a hedge. It makes for a nice feature in a winter garden.

When first planted, water deeply 1-2 times weekly to establish strong roots. Once established, it becomes quite drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during dry spells or intense heat in our hot Charleston climate. Avoid soggy conditions as this will lead to root rot.
Prune back in late winter to early spring. Propagate by stem cuttings. We recommend Modern Sprout Garden Pruners.
Your plant needs food too! We recommend Espoma Plant Tone.
Proper nutrition is important to the health of your plant and its longevity. To ensure your plant is getting the appropriate nutrition, use a fertilizer labelled for the needs of this plant and apply according to the label.
