Crape Myrtle: Purple Magic
Lagerstroemia 'Purple Magic’, also known as a Crape Myrtle Purple Magic, is a deciduous tree or shrub hybrid, prized for its resistance to mildew and 6-12” deep purple clustering flowers. The common name refers to the crepe-papery inflorescences and the myrtle-like features of the bark and foliage. In the Southeast, Crape Myrtles can grow into large trees, whereas it will die-back and maintain a smaller shrub form in cooler climates. Crape Myrtles are tough and hardy, needing summer heat to bloom. In the fall, the leaves on this particular variety will turn orange and red before falling. Crape Myrtles grow at a medium rate, and has a moderate to long life span. Crape Myrtles are valued mainly for its long period of striking summer flowers. The attractive, exfoliating bark peels away to expose a trunk which ranges in color from shades of brown to gray.
