Zamioculcas 'ZZ Plant'

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, also known as ZZ Plant, is a waxy leafed semi-evergreen perennial native to Africa. This plant has a slow growth rate, reaching 2-4 ft in height and width. Used in landscape, ZZ Plant needs partial to deep shade and highly organic or sandy soil with good drainage. It has bulbous fleshy rhizomes that give rise to glossy leaves that store water and make it highly drought tolerant. Propagate by division or leaf cutting.

While they will grow in very low levels of light, even in areas with only fluorescent light, they do best with bright indirect sunlight. Scalding and browning of leaves can occur if the plant is placed in direct sunlight.

As a houseplant, pot your ZZ Plant in well-draining soil that is watered routinely but allowed to dry out between waterings, as wet feet are not tolerated. Water it only once a month in winter months when it goes dormant; water twice monthly in the summer, but only if the soil has dried out completely.

Your indoor plants need food to live! We suggest Jungle Club House Plant Fertilizer, Grow Organic Plant Food Concentrate, or Arber Plant Food.

Use a balanced liquid fertilizer with an NPK ratio like 10-10-10 during the spring and summer growing season, diluting it to half strength to prevent root burn, especially when starting out. Apply fertilizer only once in spring and again in mid-summer, and do not fertilize in the winter, as ZZ Plants are slow-growing and have low nutrient needs. 

Proper nutrition is important to the health of your plant and its longevity. To ensure your plant is getting the appropriate nutrition, use a fertilizer labelled for the needs of this plant and apply according to the label.
