Cercis 'Redbud': Pink Heartbreaker
Cercis canadensis Redbud 'Pink Heartbreaker' is a deciduous tree in the bean (Fabaceae) family. Known for it's lovely weeping habits, often spreading wider than other weeping redbuds. This tree offers abundant lavender-pink, pea-like flowers which appear in early spring along branches before leaf out. Excellent for pollinators. Large, heart-shaped leaves emerge red-tinged, maturing to green, and turning yellow-orange in the fall. This tree generally matures to 10–12 ft in height and 6–10 ft in width, and is considered a fast grower among weeping cultivars. Hearty in zones 5a–9b. Redbuds in general do not transplant well so choose your planting site carefully.
The genus name Cercis comes from the Greek word kerkis, which means weaver's shuffle, referring to the fact that the seed pod resembles the size and shape of a weaver’s shuttle used to move thread back and forth on a loom.
