Citrus 'Lemon': Ponderosa
Citrus x limon x 'Ponderosa', also known as the Ponderosa Lemon, is a cold-sensitive evergreen hybrid known for producing 1–5 lb fruit year-round. This plant also features fragrant white flowers with purple tinges. Ideal for USDA zones 9–11 or container gardening, trees can reach 12–24 ft, though they are usually smaller, making them suitable for small gardens or containers. Because these trees are cold sensitive, growing them in pots and moving them indoors during our Charleston winters is ideal. The Ponderosa is self pollinating, though cross-pollinating with a similar cultivar can improve yield. The fruit is yellow, bumpy, and thick-skinned, resembling a citron. While they are huge, the flavor remains tangy and suitable for culinary use, such as in lemonade or zest. They are often called "five-pound" lemons.
