5 Gardening Trends for 2025

Updated: 24 hours ago

We're kicking off the new year by reflecting on our 2024 and planning for another year full of growth! One of our favorite ways to jump start a new year is to evaluate rising trends we see at Meeting Green and across the gardening community. Here are five gardening trends we see becoming popular in 2025 and beyond!

Serene spaces: In 2025, people are looking for ways to escape and reconnect with nature. In our overly online and plugged in world, finding time to spend outdoors and connecting more with the earth than your social media followers is hard! That's why we see a rise of relaxing and calm spaces to enjoy in your own garden. Creating spaces to retreat for privacy and tranquility will be one of the main priorities for people this year. We see this happening by prioritizing private destinations in the garden from intimate pools or hot tubs to secluded sitting areas for reading and relaxation. These spaces are enhanced with soft elements, lush plantings, and natural textures.

Foraging: We've watched the rise of "bringing the outside in" in terms of biophilic design, living walls, and the popularity of tropical houseplants but one of our favorite garden trends for 2025 is re-imagining this idea. Foraging is the practice of gathering wild fruits, berries, and foliage for various purposes from food to medicine. This year, it will become more popular for people to forage in their gardens for natural elements like flowers and branches to add to their home decor! While useful, edible landscapes have been popular for many years, the rise of niche gardens like, flower farming, has paved the way for foraging in the lives of everyday, at-home gardeners.

Lived in gardens: In popular culture today, consumers are opting for shopping secondhand, thrifting, and collecting sentimental, vintage pieces. The same idea can be applied in your garden! We've noticed increasing popularity among clients for vintage planters, old Charleston brick pathways, and English inspired cottage gardens. We think of these spaces as "lived in gardens" with mature trees, dense layered plantings, and undeniable charm! There is value added to something, whether it's a vintage coat or a historic garden, when it has been cared for and tended to over time. In 2025 we predict more people will be striving for this lived in look despite the age of their space! We recommend planting natives, incorporating various textures with many different species, and choosing plants intentionally so something in your garden is always in bloom.

Living fences: The rise of lived in gardens explains the popularity of "living fences." So, what exactly is a living fence? Living fences are borders created by plants for privacy or aesthetics. These fences are not traditional wood or wrought iron but could refer to hedged shrubs between you and a neighbor or a trellis of jasmine dividing your garden into different sections. This is a great way to soften your space and add interest vertically. Whether your prefer evergreen arborvitae or bamboo screens, everyone can incorporate living fences in their space in 2025!

Get (un)Real: While many of our 2025 trend predictions encourage reconnecting with nature and embracing natural elements, there are many people leaning into the world of tech. AI is becoming increasingly popular for better or for worse and more than ever, customers have outlandish expectations for plants and their landscape. Mother nature is very talented and there are many plants that actually exist that appear to be from a different world, and we think more people are going to be searching for those funky, unreal looking plants this year.
