A new year calls for a new plant! 🪴 As the weather cools down and we find ourselves at home more and more, we know it's time to cultivate our indoor jungle! Wether you're looking for a way to get your hands dirty all year or fighting the winter blues, caring for houseplants is the perfect way to spend your time inside this season. To celebrate the new year, we're looking at 5 houseplants everyone needs to add to their home in 2025!
Selaginella uncinata (Peacock Fern or Rainbow Moss) This plant deserves a spot in every houseplant collection! With its dense spreading foliage, bright blue and pink color, and ability to survive in low light this plant is a true gem. You don't find interesting color like this on many houseplants. Now, don't misunderstand... we love classic green, but the iridescent color is hard to pass up! We love adding texture to a space and ferns are a great way to achieve dimension and add interesting variation to an otherwise green, blank canvas. One tip: keep the soil moist for a happy and healthy peacock fern!
Monstera siltepecana (Silver Monstera)
This monstera is a houseplant collectors dream! These interesting monsteras are a bit easier to find these days and thankfully, the high price tag is decreasing which means it's the perfect time to add one to your collection! Silver monstera has a climbing growth habit and will benefit from a moss pole, and as it matures, the leaves will even fenestrate! Like most monsteras, it prefers bright, indirect light along with high humidity and well draining soil. You should water your silver monstera when the top two inches of the soil are dry, but don't let it sit in soggy soil!
Philodendron hederaceum (Silver Stripe)
One of our favorite cultivars of the commonly called heartleaf philodendron is the silver stripe! This variety is similar to the more commonly seen "brasil" cultivar but, like the name suggests, sports a silver stripe through the leaf! These philodendron are very easy to care for and are very forgiving for new plant parents. If you provide average, medium light and water weekly this plant will thrive!
Hoya compacta (Hindu Rope)
Talk about funky foliage! This hoya is one of our most popular plants and for good reason. You can't get curly, thick waxy leaves like this from any other plant! This lush look does take a long time to achieve as this plant is a slow grower, but with enough time and patience you'll have a unique addition to your home. Hoyas thrive in bright, indirect light and low humidity! The hoya compacta should be watered when the top few inches of the soil are dry, but ensure your pot has good drainage because hindu rope are susceptible to root rot.
Ficus elastica (Burgundy Rubber Plant)
The rubber plant is the largest plant on this list because everyone needs a big tree in their home! When left untouched in its natural habitat, these trees can grow up to 100ft tall Indoors, most are kept between 3-10ft tall depending on support and growing conditions. The large, glossy leaves are very attractive and while we're big fans of the dark burgundy variety, the rubber plant is available in many variegated forms too. These trees prefer bright, indirect light and average watering. Plus, you can trim stems to encourage branching and create a full, bushy plant for your home!
These five plants are in our greenhouse right now and we think they would all make great additions to your indoor jungle this season. Looking for a specific plant? We restock the greenhouse consistently and are always ready to talk plants with you! Stop in and let's find the perfect plant for your space in 2025.
