Happy spring! Are you ready to get planting this season? One of our favorite spring activities is hosting container gardening courses and teaching container classes for local clubs and organizations. If you haven't made it out to one of our classes, don't worry! We're sharing some of our tips, tricks, and go-to plants right here!

Thriller - Filler - Spiller

The common phrase when designing a container garden is "Thriller, filler, spiller." This is not a hard rule, but a good pattern to follow for a professional and full container garden. "Thriller" refers to the the tallest plant or the focal point of your container. "Fillers" are medium height plants literally filling in the space between your thriller and the pot. Finally, "spillers" are low growing, trailing plants the spill over the sides of your container.

Meeting Green's Container Gardening Design Tips & Tricks
  • Always use complimentary colors! If something feels "off," your colors may be competing for attention!

  • Choose one plant you love and need to have in your container as a starting point. Work from there to avoid decision fatigue!

  • It's important to vary the texture and leaf shape of your plants. Different foliage is the key to interesting containers.

  • Add flowers for a pop of color, but don't depend on them! Foliage is more reliable.

  • Choose a wide variety of plants for a professional look.
