Ferns are our go to plant for low light, lots of texture, and interesting foliage. With over 10,000 known varieties of ferns, and many more being discovered in tropical areas today, there's a type of fern for every plant lover! This spring, we're loving the rabbit's foot fern for its easy going nature and furry feet! Native to Fiji, the rabbit's foot fern is epiphytic meaning it grows in the nooks of trees and rock. It receives all it's moisture and nutrients from it's environment. The 'feet' are actually rhizomes and attach to natural materials for support in the wild.
Growing Rabbit's Foot Ferns as Houseplants
We love using these funky ferns as houseplants in the Lowcountry because they are easier to care for indoors than many other popular ferns. They prefer medium, indirect light and like to stay moist but not soggy. It's important that you don't overwater or leave the fern sitting in water. Plant your footed fern in a hanging basket or pot that showcases the furry rhizomes growing over the sides of the container. Bonus - it's graceful lacy foliage is non toxic to dogs and cats so it makes a perfect plant for pet parents!
