Caring for Fall Mums in Charleston

Chrysanthemums are a fall staple and make the perfect addition to your autumn decor. While mums are technically perennials, many people treat them as annuals for their porch pots in the fall. When you buy mums at the garden center this season, keep in mind they've been trained to grow perfectly rounded and encouraged to bloom by the shortening day light hours and expert greenhouse care. Once they reach your front door, they need proper maintenance to thrive through the season! Here are our five tips for caring for fall mums in Charleston!

  • A colorful fall display at Meeting Green in Charleston, SC. The photo features shiny black pots with fall flowers like a pink mum and rudbeckia. Fall flowers, plant shop, Charleston, Landscape Inspo
  • Close up of a red mum with lots of buds and two blooms. Text on photo highlighting the buds that are about to open. Mums sold at Meeting Green, a plant store and landscaping firm in Charleston, SC.
  • A fall display on black stairs leading up to a front porch in Charleston, SC. Pumpkins in shades of orange, green, and white surround a bright mustard yellow pot with an orange blooming mum.

Meeting Green's Mum Tips:

  • It’s best to buy mums when blooms haven’t popped! You should be shopping when the plant is full of buds or just starting to open so you can watch their full bloom period!

  • Make sure you thoroughly water the mum as soon as they get home! They can be soaked in a bucket for 20 to 30 minutes if needed. This will set you and your mum up for success.

  • Mums should be placed in at least 6 hours of full sun, but they will benefit from some afternoon shade relief while it’s still hot outside in Charleston!

  • When watering mums, it’s best to place the hose or can at the soil. Watering overhead will damage the leaves and flowers over time, plus very little water will successfully reach the soil!

  • Throughout the season, you should deadhead mums to remove spent blooms and check for watering needs daily.

  • Corton Petra in a gray texture pot surrounded by green and orange pumpkins at Meeting Green in Charleston, SC
  • Orange marigolds with dark green leaves sold at Meeting Green in Charleston, SC. Plant store selling fall flowers and foliage.
  • Stacks og grey pots with a terracotta rim full of purple ornamental peppers and burgundy coral bells. Fall color and foliage sold at Meeting Green in Charleston, SC.

Mums are not the only options for front porch plants this fall! Consider adding asters, crotons, celosia, marigolds, huechera, ferns, grasses, ornamental peppers, and ornamental cabbage/kale to your pots this season.
