It's officially cold in Charleston and there is potential snow on the forecast... so what can you do in the garden right now? Prep for spring! Use this chilly season to plan your garden beds and check off those less glamorous chores. At Meeting Green, this means we've scrubbed the greenhouse ceiling, repainted display tables, unloaded new outdoor pottery, and worked behind the scenes on spring classes and events. Here are three things to do in your garden before spring for a successful growing season!
Clean and replace your gardening tools
It may not be fun to head out to the shed and look at dirty, poorly organized tools from last year, but someone has to do it! Now is the time to clean up your spades, shovels, and clippers and decide what needs to be replaced. Wash tools with soap and water and ensure you're drying them completely to prevent rust. Replace any tools that are in poor condition so you're ready for a busy season of planting!
Invest in pots and planters
You'll be tempted to buy plants first, but now is the time to focus on the (semi) permanent items in your garden. These objects will create structure and can help inform your plant choices in the coming months! Large, high quality pottery acts as the foundation of your design so spend the time now choosing certain shapes and styles so you can spend March filling them with plants!
Prepare your soil for spring planting
Last but certainly not least, whether you're working with in ground or raised garden beds, you most likely need to amend your soil. We always recommend sending a soil sample off to Clemson to get it tested before adding anything to your soil. Once you have your results, add necessary amendments and organic matter for fresh beds ready for planting in a few short weeks.
Ready to get started? Shop garden essentials during our Prep for Spring week at Meeting Green! Tools, amendments, and pots are 15% off January 26th - February 1st and we're having a yard sale with discounted and dormant plants that just need a little TLC on January 31st at 9am until sold out.
Stay tuned for more garden updates and to-do lists as the threat of frost and snow passes. We can't wait to get planting with you this spring!
