After scouring YouTube, social media, and tracking our houseplants sales through 2025, we’ve compiled a list of houseplant trends we expect to see in the new year! Browse these incoming trends and review our selection of plants you need to add to your collection in 2026.
Integrating and styling houseplants into your decor
During the pandemic, houseplant lovers were focused on building huge collections that lined entire shelves and took up major floor space. Plant collections got a little out of hand! As lifestyle and home decor content becomes more popular online, we think plant parents will be more intentional with their shopping and design purposeful spaces, accented with plants. To achieve a cozy and curated plant aesthetic, you have to utilize a variety of plant sizes, growth habits, and textures. Ensure you add a tall tree like a ficus or draecena for height, trailing plants like pothos or pendant anthuriums to your shelves, and don’t forget table top options like the colorful calathea or textured begonia. With an intentional mix and carefully chosen varieties, your space will be Pinterest ready!
Going Back to the basics
Speaking of crazy houseplant collections, we expect plant shoppers to be searching for more manageable and easy to care for plants in 2026. After years of chasing rare varieties and paying high price tags, plant shopping is going back to the basics! Thanks to the advancement of plant science, funky variegated plants are in all the big box stores these days. Because of this, people have been asking us for classic plants like the spider plant, maranta, begonias, snake plants and ferns. We see this trend continuing in the new year as people reconnect with popular houseplants of years past.
Focusing on structure not foliage
Finally, we’re seeing a move away from lush, broad leaf tropicals. In the past, the bird of paradise was the thing to have and a staple in plant filled homes. Today, with the rise of Japandi style (a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics) plants with exposed trunks, interesting shape, and sculptural elements are becoming more popular. Plants like the dracaena candelabra and ficus umbellata will be on the top of peoples wish list in 2026!
