May is here! Even without the traditional April showers, the flowers are popping out and showing off. If you're itching to get planting this week, you may be wondering if you should plant spring or summer annuals.
When it comes to May weather in Charleston, we recommend leaning into heat tolerant and long lasting blooms that will keep your containers full and thriving through the upcoming season! If you're planting in the sun, it's even more important to think about incorporating drought tolerant options in your pots. Add these container gardening flowers that bloom all summer long to your plant shopping list this month.
Bold blooms:
Vinca
Pentas
Angelonia (aka summer snapdragon!)
Gomphrena
Lantana
Not interested in blooms? Add color with Funky foliage:
Plectranthus
Coleus
Carex (we love feather falls!)
Sweet potato vine
Let's talk about designing a container to last through the summer. Before getting your hands dirty this month, take a hard look at the calendar and see how often you'll be in town to water your pots! Summer in the south gets hot fast. If you're visiting family in June and vacation for two weeks in July, you don't want to plant sensitive flowers in your containers. Plus, you may want to prioritize interesting foliage that is more reliable in times of drought.
Meeting Green's go-to drought tolerant container recipe:
Plant something with some height like oleander. Fill in below with a foxtail fern and euphorbia diamond frost. Finally, add lemon ball sedum, mezoo, and portulaca spilling over the edge of your container!
