Strobilanthes 'Persian Shield'

Strobilanthes auriculata var. dyeriana, also known as a Persian Shield, is noted for and grown for its showy foliage. It's a soft-stemmed, tropical, evergreen shrub or sub-shrub. The leaves are a variegated dark green and deep purple with silvery-purple iridescence and dark purple on the underside. It can be grown as a perennial in warmer climate zones—8b and warmer—perfect for Charleston SC's Zone 9.

This plant needs bright, indirect light if grown as a house plant. If grown outdoors it needs part sun, part shade to keep its bright metallic purple leaves. Too much hot sun burns the leaves, but too little shade makes the plant turn green and weak.

This plant needs evenly moist soil. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Do not let the soil dry out completely, or the plant will quickly droop. Avoid soaking or waterlogging the soil, as standing water causes root rot.

It grows best when planted in a rich soil. To promote a more bushy appearance, pinch back the stems. We recommend Modern Sprout Garden Pruners.
