Cercis 'Redbuds': Pink Pom Poms
Cercis canadensis 'Pink Pom Poms' is a deciduous tree in the bean (Fabaceae) family. A prolific redbud, debuting double reddish-purple sterile female flowers in the spring before leaf-out. The heart-shaped leaves are small, thick, and glossy compared to it's cultivar cousins. This tree will grow to around 13 ft tall and wide—possibly growing to 20 ft tall over time. This tree is pH tolerant and does well in moist-average well-draining soils. Redbuds in general do not transplant well so choose your site carefully.
The genus name Cercis comes from the Greek word kerkis, which means weaver's shuffle, referring to the fact that the seed pod resembles the size and shape of a weaver’s shuttle used to move thread back and forth on a loom.
